Modelling the E&N in HO Scale in my basement

With Athearn’s release of the 33,000 gallon tank cars suitable for LPG and Anhydrous Ammonia in the Genesis line, I picked up three of them labelled for Procor.

Shortly after getting home with them, Cam and I took inventory of them for coupler replacements. One thing shocked us both:

I have enough propane cars to fill every facility on the layout, their replacements and a few more to cycle on and off the island.

I’m done buying propane cars!

So with the exception of the skeleton log cars, I’m coming very close to having enough rolling stock to fully operate the layout. I just need to acquire enough metal wheels (hey, buddy, can you spare me some 33″ semi-scale Intermountain wheels?) and couplers to operate them with.

Amazing, eh?

    I just ordered 50 packets (100 pair) of Kadee #18’s (NEM pocket couplers) for waggons…you are on your own for buying couplers. I also have a hundred or so 3 link couplers for loose waggons…but no 33″ wheelsets 🙂

    I know the feeling about more cars than space, as the current crop are about it for me, else I will be well over capacity.

    Jon, I have been following your blog for about 6 months since discovering its existence. I am also modelling the E&N at the Velco diamond near Parksville circa 1948 to 1955 in O scale (P48). Benchwork construction for the initial phase is currently underway.

    My location gives the opportunity to run CP, Comox Logging, Victoria Lumber (MacMillan Bloedel) and Canadian Collieries Dunsmuir Ltd rolling stock.

    While plans for a wide range of E&N and Vancouver Island rolling stock, bridges, stations, water tanks and so on are available, I have been unable to find plans for the CP wooden skeleton log cars. If you have a source for such plans, I would appreciate the info.

      Wooden skeleton log cars? Unfortunately, I haven’t seen anything for those, even pictures. The skeleton log flats I’m wanting to replicate are the steel ones…

    Jon,

    I am not sure how many wood skeleton cars existed on the E&N, however, 200 were built in Victoria in 1930 and originally carried E&N numbers 1000 to 1199. They were later renumbered into the CP FL series 308266 to 308500. While they had steel bunks, the frame was three 10 by 30 inch beams bolted together. They lasted at least until the end of Mac Blo’s Nanaimo Lakes show in December 1969–most with their original arch bar trucks.
